How to develop English Listening Skills?

How to develop English Listening Skills?

Developing English Listening Skills?

Listening has evolved as one of the primary and major language learning skills. Listen! Listen! Listen! When you listen to the spoken English then you get the chance to develop your own English Language. When you listen to some piece of information with keen interest then you can infer what’s been said. When I say keen interest it means a total undivided interest. Only then can you call yourself an active listener.
Listening is a responsibility too! When you are listening to a person keenly it shows that you are patient and empathetic. It also shows that you are a considerate person. When you demonstrate these qualities the person to whom you are listening feels responsible and confident. S/he would now feel like sharing with you even more pertinent information.

There are certain things that you need to demonstrate as a responsible listener.
  1. Wear a perfectly decent facial expression: If not a glee wear at least a neutral expression when you are listening to someone. This will keep the person’s morale considerably high.
  2. Show a nod of appreciation or acknowledgement. This will keep the person speaking in good spirit. S/he would feel relieved and tension-free while making a presentation.
  3. Please never impede the person with unnecessary questions. Take time to question. Never ask questions just for the sake of asking. On the contrary take time and ask questions only when the provided data falls short of your expectations.
  4. When asked for feedback and do it proactively. I mean take time to glean all the valuable suggestions and put them forth in an utmost objective way.
Listening could be done for becoming informative, more knowledgeable, to take some notes, or just for the sake of enjoyment. For whatever reason it could be see that you pay wholehearted attention when you are listening. You have to numb all the screams in the mind to listen to some specific piece of information. What you need to do importantly is to get unplugged from the world for a while. Only then could you listen to what’s being said. If listening is part of some examination then don’t you dare to be distracted?

While listening to a piece of information, as part of examination process, pay more attention to signal words ad thought reversers. For example you could easily identify information like ‘In Italy during the year 1932’. A thought reverser could be a signaling word. Something like: “However”, “Even though”, “Despite of” and many more. Believe me a question would be surely posed there. Interesting, isn’t it? Well that’s how things are.

When you are listening to something even for the sake of sheer entertainment, do it responsibly. Only then could you actually chisel your listening skills. Before listening to some piece of information try to glean some aspects related to it. This way you could actually foretell what you are going to listen. You can then listen to and please do not let an alien word pass you by. Familiarize yourself to the word by means of using a dictionary.

I am sure these methods will for sure help you refine your listening skills.
