Developing
English Vocabulary
Language
is made of vocabulary, whether you agree or not this is the fact! Vocabulary
can be categorized into two broad headings: (i) Active
Vocabulary and (ii) Passive Vocabulary
Active
vocabulary is the group of words that you use on a daily basis and passive
vocabulary are words that you would come across when you are in a
native-English speaking environment.
For
example: Hey what are you doing? Doing is active vocabulary
You
are quite loquacious! Loquacious is passive vocabulary.
So, in order to have a decent grip on vocabulary you need to know both active and
passive words. In this
write-up we will discuss various ways of adding to our vocabulary and making it
as exhaustive as possible.
Become an active reader: Sheer
ambition to add to your vocabulary will not see you through. You need to add to
your vocabulary actively. And in order to attain that you have to read anything
and anything that comes handy. When you stumble upon an alien word just get a
dictionary and start looking for the meaning. That doesn’t end your job. Now
you need to use the word contextually. When you have at least written five
decent sentences using the alien word, you have done something to have the word
etched in your memory. Get the sentences verified by someone who is proficient
in the use of English language.
Have in possession various vocabulary tools such as
dictionaries, thesauruses and many more. Develop love and flair to add to your
existing knowledge. In fact you can have a book kept aside for jotting down
interesting words. This way you will have your own collection of wonderful
words.
You
need to keep retrieving the word from your memory in order to have it in your
memory for a longer time. What you can do is utter the word frequently with your
family and friends. At least one time daily or at least once in two days. This
will keep you in touch with the word for a longer time.
Have realistic
goals: Commit yourself to learning some new words on a regular basis. Form
groups and tutorials and share them with your friends. Listen to the new words
they collected. This way you can have fun too and above all joy of having in
possession so many words.
Make a habit
of running through newspapers, science journals and any other sports magazine
on a regular basis. This will certainly keep you abreast with the latest. Let
you ears become keener to new words. Once a new word is trapped analyze it
thoroughly from all the possible dimensions.
You may guess the meanings of the
words if they are alien to you. This you can do in a group. Once you do some
intelligent guessing of the word based on the context, compare it with the
dictionary meaning. If your meaning has come close to the actual meaning you
can give yourself an affectionate pat on your back.
These
suggestions will certainly help you navigate through the vast seas of
vocabulary both smoothly and confidently.
