Ways of developing or improving English Vocabulary

Language is made of vocabulary, whether you agree or not this is the fact! Vocabulary can be categorized into two broad headings: (i) Active Vocabulary and (ii) Passive Vocabulary

Active vocabulary is the group of words that you use on a daily basis and passive vocabulary are words that you would come across when you are in a native-English speaking environment. 

For example: Hey what are you doing? Doing is active vocabulary

You are quite loquacious! Loquacious is passive vocabulary.

So, in order to have a decent grip on vocabulary you need to know both active and passive words. In this write-up we will discuss various ways of adding to our vocabulary and making it as exhaustive as possible.

Become an active reader: Sheer ambition to add to your vocabulary will not see you through. You need to add to your vocabulary actively. And in order to attain that you have to read anything and anything that comes handy. When you stumble upon an alien word just get a dictionary and start looking for the meaning. That doesn’t end your job. Now you need to use the word contextually. When you have at least written five decent sentences using the alien word, you have done something to have the word etched in your memory. Get the sentences verified by someone who is proficient in the use of English language.

 Have in possession various vocabulary tools such as dictionaries, thesauruses and many more. Develop love and flair to add to your existing knowledge. In fact you can have a book kept aside for jotting down interesting words. This way you will have your own collection of wonderful words.

You need to keep retrieving the word from your memory in order to have it in your memory for a longer time. What you can do is utter the word frequently with your family and friends. At least one time daily or at least once in two days. This will keep you in touch with the word for a longer time.

 Have realistic goals: Commit yourself to learning some new words on a regular basis. Form groups and tutorials and share them with your friends. Listen to the new words they collected. This way you can have fun too and above all joy of having in possession so many words.

 Make a habit of running through newspapers, science journals and any other sports magazine on a regular basis. This will certainly keep you abreast with the latest. Let you ears become keener to new words. Once a new word is trapped analyze it thoroughly from all the possible dimensions.

You may guess the meanings of the words if they are alien to you. This you can do in a group. Once you do some intelligent guessing of the word based on the context, compare it with the dictionary meaning. If your meaning has come close to the actual meaning you can give yourself an affectionate pat on your back.


These suggestions will certainly help you navigate through the vast seas of vocabulary both smoothly and confidently.
